Tim Durbin’s team has been trying to find a good match all week.

So far this season, a good opponent is a hard thing to come by for the South Whidbey girls volleyball team. In a four-game weekend tournament and two regular matchups this week, the Falcons went undefeated, moving to 3-1 overall.

Unable to get into a 2A varsity tournament last Saturday in Yakima, the girls still travelled to the Sun Dome to compete in a 4A junior varsity tournament. The competition, however, was not what the team expected, according to Durbin. After getting the best of Eisenhower’s JV 25-14, 25-21 and 25-23, the Falcons saw even less resistance later, easily winning the tournament championship in three fast games against Enumclaw.

Coming home Tuesday, the girls found no resistance in North Cascades Conference opponent Lakewood as they quickly dispatched them 25-15, 25-18, 25-18. Highlights for the night included senior Brianna Hussey’s 28 assists — which compared well with the 49 she had over four matches in Yakima — and 22 kills between Nici Eaton, Liz Norris and Katy McGillen.

On Thursday, the Falcons travelled to play Port Townsend, a team that seemed to have some real fight for at least part of the night just before collapsing. Behind Jordan Tobler’s six kills and Brianna Hussey’s 15 assists and 4 kills, South Whidbey took the visitors 25-12, 26-24, 25-10.

The Falcons go on the road for much of next week, coming back to Erikson Gymnasium Saturday for the Falcon Invitational.
