Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers has received about a dozen requests for help so far for its first-ever work blitz.

Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers is a new nonprofit modeled after South Whidbey Hearts & Hammers, the legendary grassroots group that swarms across the South End each May to do no-cost home repairs and maintenance projects for homeowners who can’t do the work themselves.

The Central Whidbey group will continue to accept applications through April 29. Families desiring assistance should e-mail cwheartsandhammers@gmail.com, or leave a message at 360-240-2964.

Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers is also looking for volunteers for its first work day, which will be held Saturday, May 30.

All skill levels are welcome, and helpers are needed for both major and minor home repairs and maintenance tasks, painting, gardening, trash collecting and other jobs.

People interested in helping out can pick up a volunteer application at one of the following Coupeville and Greenbank locations and return it by May 15: Prairie Center Market, Whidbey Island Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, the Coupeville Library, Coupeville Town Hall, Coupeville Post Office, Linds, the Greenbank Store and the County Deli.

Volunteers can also contact Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers via cwheartsandhammers@gmail.com or 360-240-2964. Financial and materials contributions are also welcome.
