New park trail named for Dorothy Cleveland

The Port of South Whidbey commissioners remembered one of their own Wednesday when they named a new trail after the late Dorothy Cleveland.

“The Port of South Whidbey commissioners remembered one of their own Wednesday when they named a new trail after the late Dorothy Cleveland.Commissioner Jan Smith proposed the idea, and it was quickly endorsed by Gene Sears and Jim Hawley. A sign will be designed to erect at the trailhead in the port’s Possession Beach Waterfront Park.Cleveland passed away last year after suffering a stroke. She was one of the most active people on South Whidbey and was involved in many clubs and organizations. She was a port commissioner for many years. The new trail starts in the park and wends its way up a steep hillside through cedars, firs, maples, and alders, offering occasional terrific views of Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains. The trail is about half a mile long, but probably seems longer because of how steep it is. It was built by AmeriCorps workers under the direction of Will Black.Art Pratt, park caretaker, said the trail is a much easier climb than he would have expected thanks to the effort of the AmeriCorps team. It’s an easy up, he told the commissioners. They did a good job. People who otherwise wouldn’t can climb the trail, Pratt said. The team was paid approximately $10,000 for their labor. The trail is ready to be used, although it will probably be lengthened by looping it around from the top of the hill at some point in the future. Plans are to discuss the second phase if Black can attend next month’s port meeting. The commissioners also plan to space a few benches along the trail to give people a place to rest. People who live on the Cultus Bay side of the ridge can now use the trail to reach the park.”
