Ferry alert for Keystone route

The Washington State Department of Transportation advises both drivers and walk-on travelers to plan ahead for travel on the Keystone-Port Townsend ferry route during Port Townsend’s Wooden Boat Festival.

The festival takes place the weekend of Sept. 5 to 7.

Vehicle travelers are strongly encouraged to make reservations ahead of time online or by phone, and walk-on passengers should consider traveling during off-peak times to avoid long waits at the terminals.

With the 50-car, 300-passenger Steilacoom II serving the route this year, there is limited passenger and vehicle capacity, and ferry officials expect many sailings to sell out.

The heaviest passenger traffic will be mid-morning on Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 7 leaving Keystone, and mid to late afternoon Saturday and Sunday leaving Port Townsend.

Ferry staff anticipates that the most popular sailings will be the 10:15 a.m. and noon sailings from Keystone and the 3:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. sailings from Port Townsend each day.
