Bailey to hold town hall teleconference

State Rep. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, is inviting 10th District residents to participate in a telephone town hall meeting on Monday,

May 12.

“It’s important for me to hear from everyone in my district,” Bailey said. “This option gives folks the opportunity to join in a community dialogue from home. The steps to participate are user-friendly and I encourage all to join in.”

Bailey held traditional town hall meetings in April, and will hold “coffee talks” in two locations on South Whidbey on Thursday, May 22.

At 7 a.m. Bailey will speak to the Langley Chamber of Commerce, then at 10 a.m. she’ll be at the 1504 Coffee Bar in Freeland.

Port to host marina workshop Monday

The Port of South Whidbey will hold a workshop next week to discuss issues surrounding the South Whidbey Marina project.

The meeting is at 9 a.m. Monday, May 5, in the port office conference room in Freeland.

Commissioners will consider financing issues, near-term improvements to the marina property, an amendment to their agreement with Langley, permitting issues, potential property transfers and possible inclusion of diving activities in the marina project.

Commons get grant for youth programs

The South Whidbey Commons has received a grant of $22,180 from the Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound for equipment needed at Island Coffee House & Books.

“We thank the Boeing employees for making a positive difference in our community by helping our youth learn new job skills,” said Commons board member Patty Sievers.

The money will be used to purchase equipment that will continue to support job training of our local students. Items to be purchased include a commercial refrigerator and freezer, an ice maker espresso machine, espresso grinder, acrylic display case, a laser printer and a new cash register system.

Art therapy group hosts free session

The general public is invited to a free art group facilitated by art therapist Sarah Manchester.

All ages are welcome to the meetings, which will be held every Friday at the South Whidbey Commons Back Room in Langley. The group will gather from 1:30 to 3 p.m.; junior high and high schoolers will meet from 3 to 5 p.m.

Making art can be therapeutic and healing, Manchester said.

Presentation will explore the brain

A public discussion on how the brain functions comes to South Whidbey next week.

The South Whidbey Assembly of God Church is sponsoring Island Christian Academy students as they delve into the mysteries of neurology.

Each student will orally defend a neurological topic including brain anatomy, function, pathology and case studies. Topics will include brain imaging, the limbic system, cranial nerves, endocrine system, strokes, bone disease, autonomic nervous system, ventricles and meninges.

The event begins at 6 p.m.

Bayview cemetery meeting scheduled

The Bayview Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting next week.

The meeting is 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6 at Visser’s Funderal Home in Langley.

Happy Hounds, a 4-H dog club, is hosting a plant sale.
