Oak Harbor man dies after car crash

An Oak Harbor man died at Harborview Medical Center as a result of injuries from a car accident.

An Oak Harbor man died at Harborview Medical Center over the weekend as a result of injuries sustained during a Fidalgo Island car accident earlier this month, according to a report from Washington State Patrol.

The agency reported the death of John Butz, 84, on March 18, nearly two weeks after the collision that took place on Highway 20 just south of Tibbles Lane.

On March 5, Gregory Cloud, a 26-year-old resident of Aptos, California, was driving northbound on the highway and attempted to make a U-turn over a double yellow line. East Wenatchee resident Dean Butz, 56, was driving south and tried to stop but ultimately struck Cloud’s vehicle on the rear passenger side. The vehicles came to a rest in the southbound lane.

John Butz and 55-year-old East Wenatchee resident Maria Arevalo were passengers in Dean Butz’s car.

Three of the individuals were injured and transported to Island Hospital in Anacortes. John Butz was taken to a local hospital and later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Both vehicles were totaled in the collision. Washington State Patrol reported that drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident, and the cause is under investigation.

Cloud was arrested and charged March 14 with vehicular assault in Skagit County and was ordered not to operate any vehicle without an ignition interlock device.
