Two teenagers were caught asleep with a bong and marijuana inside a stolen car on Whidbey Island Feb. 5, according to court documents.

The 17-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl, both Oak Harbor residents, were arrested and appeared in Island County Juvenile Court the same day. The judge found probable cause existed to believe they may have committed the crimes of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of cannabis.

Prosecutors charged the boy with the two counts on Feb. 8, but the girl isn’t currently facing charges. The boy pleaded not guilty this week.

According to court documents, a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office came upon a green Kia Soul parked in the Monroe Landing Boat Launch near midnight, when the area was closed. The deputy noticed the driver’s side window was broken out and was covered with a jacket. He checked with dispatch and found that the car was reported stolen.

The deputy looked in and saw the two teenagers asleep inside. A large glass bong was in the back seat and a baggy of suspected pot was sitting on the console, the deputy wrote in his report on the incident.

The boy told the deputy that they found the car near the Anchor Point Apartments on Oak Harbor Road, the report states. The ignition had been torn open and wire were hanging from the steering column.

A judge set the boy’s bail at $1,500. Court documents show that he was convicted in two cases in 2022. In one case, he was convicted of assault in the fourth degree, malicious mischief and criminal trespass. In the other case, he was convicted of burglary and malicious mischief.
