RaeLynn Marie Hall
RaeLynn Marie (Jacobson) Hall, 33, of Langley died on Dec. 22, 2001. She was born in Chester, Mont., and grew up in Port Orchard, Wash.
Rae and her husband, Bill Hall, were married in 1999. Together they operated their own car repair business in Langley, where she enjoyed working on cars. She was a kind person and never thought twice about helping others. Her family was her life. She had a zest for life, was outgoing and never afraid to share her feelings. She enjoyed camping, boating and gardening.
Mrs. Hall is survived by her husband of Langley; her father John Jacobson, of Chester; stepfather Ed Pickens, of Port Orchard; daughter Nichole Shelden of Langley; stepdaughter Sarah Hall of Langley; son Brandon Taylor of Port Orchard; two sisters, Amanda Jacobson of Seattle and Joni Jacobson of Denver; and a brother, Greg Brown of Gary, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Dora Lynn (Hodge) Pickens, and her grandmother, Berniece Jacobson.
No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Rae Hall Memorial Fund at US Bank in Freeland.
Arthur LeRoy Halverson
Arthur LeRoy Halverson, 90, died Dec. 31, 2001, in Coupeville. He was born Oct. 8, 1911, in Everett to John and Margaret Halverson.
Mr. Halverson married Shirley Bumstead on May 30, 1931. He started the Beverly Mill Works in Everett, and he moved with his wife to Whidbey Island in 1958.
He was one of the original members of the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club and was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt.
Mr. Halverson is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley; two children and their spouses, Roy and Linda Halverson and Joy and Rolf Halladay; five grandchildren, Jamie, Racanne, Randy, Barbie and Roberta; a great-grandson, Jerib; and his niece Margaret Minor. A sister, Mildred Dinnsen, preceded him in death.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Bayview Cemetery. A gathering will follow at the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club in Langley. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to a charity of choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Visser Funeral Home in Langley.
Patrick Wayne Helland
Patrick Wayne Helland, 42, of Clinton died Dec. 29, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 11, 1959.
Mr. Helland was a beloved husband, father, brother, son and uncle. He was a passionate fisherman and cook. To those who knew him, he was the embodiment of hard work, commitment, loyalty and dedication. His friends are countless. His fish barbecues and island parties with family and friends will never be forgotten.
After graduation from Meadowdale High School in Edmonds, Pat purchased property on Whidbey Island with his brothers, who all helped each other build beautiful homes to raise their families. He was known as a person who would assist anyone at the drop of a hat. Pat also had a unique sense of humor and quick wit. He had an appreciation for life in its most simple form.
He is survived by his wife, Jill; daughters Melissa, Jocelyn, Tabitha and DeLanie; father, Wayne Helland of Bothell; mother Charlene Ray of Snohomish; brothers Tim and Michael Helland of Clinton; and sisters Laurie Whitcher and Tara Hartleroad.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held at noon Jan. 5 at Calvary Church in Clinton. Donations may be made in Pat’s name to Calvary Church, 3821 E. French Road, Clinton, WA 98236.
Patricia Louise Phelps
Patricia Louise Phelps, 68, died at her home in Greenbank on Dec. 28, 2001 after spending Christmas with her family, following a 30-year battle with multiple sclerosis. She was born on Nov. 16, 1933, in Indianapolis to Robert and Dorothy (Weir) Buchner. Her father was a jazz band leader and her mother an accomplished musician, and through them she developed a lifelong passion for music.
She graduated from Southport High School in Indianapolis, and then attended Indiana University, graduating with a bachelor of arts in education and music. While in college, she was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota sorority and belonged to the Singing Hoosiers, a choir that traveled throughout the United States. She began her career as an educator in elementary school, teaching music in Indianapolis in 1955.
Patricia married Ernest Phelps in Indianapolis on June 23, 1957. That same year they moved to Inglewood, Calif. where she taught second and third grade. She also served as church organist for Hawthorne Methodist Church and its 1,000 members.
In 1966 the Phelpses moved to Bellevue, Wash., where Patricia taught at Ardmoor Elementary School. She also served as a church organist at the Methodist Church in Bellevue and for special services on the Eastside, and she sang in the Cascadian Chorale. She and Ernest moved to Issaquah in 1968. She continued teaching in Bellevue, and she also taught private piano lessons to 40 students. Her health failed due to MS, and she finally had to sell her Steinway grand piano and stop teaching.
She and Ernest moved to Greenbank in 1988. She was a very active member of Whidbey Free Evangelical Church and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She collected recipes, loved to cook, was a member of the church prayer chain and a member of the Crisis Pregnancy Center.
Mrs. Phelps is survived by her husband, Ernest, of Greenbank; two sons and their spouses, Randall R. and Justine Phelps and their daughter Janae, of Tacoma; and Jeffery R. and Nancy Phelps, who live in mainland China.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 5 at Whidbey Evangelical Free Church in Greenbank. A private family inurement following cremation will be held at a later date.
