Dorothy Mae Duncan

Dorothy Mae Duncan, 93, Langley died on Nov. 13, 2001 at Careage House in Coupeville. She suffered a fall, followed by a stroke on Nov. 11.

Mrs. Duncan was born in Baldwin, Wis. on May 25, 1908 and grew up in Adams, Wis. She married Homer A. Fairfield in 1926 and was widowed in 1942. In 1945 she married John Duncan, with whom she attended high school.

The couple lived in Seattle from 1948 to 1969 when they moved to their final home on Maxwelton Road in Langley. They were married for 54 years before John ’s death in 1999.

Mrs. Duncan lived on Whidbey Island for 32 years. She loved music and entertaining and was extremely frugal and organized. She was an avid rockhound and enjoyed oil and watercolor painting, jewelry making, knitting, crocheting and embroidery.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Homer R. and Maureen M. Fairfield of Auburn, Wash.; granddaughter Mary Jane Fairfield and great granddaughters, LeeAnne Brock and Shawna Brock of Selah, Wash.; and two brothers, William Allyn of Anacortes and Charles Allyn of Fife.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Duncan; her parents; sisters Marion Deuter and Agnes Williams, and a brother, Robert Allyn.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. at Langley United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the South Whidbey Lions Eyesight Program, the South Whidbey Historical Museum or the Langley Library.

Fred Lee Bince

Former Whidbey Island resident Fred Lee Bince died on Nov. 16, 2001 at his home in Everett.

He was born Sept. 28, 1923, in California and moved from Whidbey Island to Everett four years ago. He worked as an electrical engineer for 34 years for AT&T before he retired in 1978. His hobby was late-model stock car racing, which he did for many years.

Mr. Bince is survived by his wife, Mary Bince, of Everett; daughter Dianna Purcell of Reno, Nev.; stepfather Claude Croft of Langley; and sister Vickie Grint of Sargent, Neb.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Chapel of the Resurrection on the grounds of Cedar Park Assembly of God, Bothell. A private committal service was held at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, Everett.

Arrangements were under the direction of Chapel of the Resurrection Funeral Home in Bothell.

Elizabeth Crawford Doan

Elizabeth Crawford Doan of Langley died Nov. 15, 2001 at her home, with her family beside her.

Mrs. Doan grew up in Seattle and attended Ravenna School and Roosevelt High School.

Her home was always open to her many wonderful friends and especially to all the young people who were friends of her children. She was a perfect example of unconditional love, always seeing the positive in every life situation and every person she knew. Everyone will miss her beautiful spirit, her love of life, her vibrant ways, her laughter and the twinkle in her eye.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Sandford, and their daughters, Judy and her husband Dick Johnson, Marilee and her husband Bob Stephens, and Janine and her husband, Rick Tachell. She was blessed with seven grandchildren, Steven, Tim, Bob, Sandy, Molly, Keegan and Tyler, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth has been so courageous, and we know she would like to thank everyone who was close to her for understanding her disease. Her family and friends are going to miss her, but we know that she will be as beautiful an angel in heaven as she was on Earth.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, Nov. 25 at 3 p.m. at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church at Sixth and Cascade in Langley.

Ernest Rickey McCollum

Ernest Rickey McCollum died on Oct. 24, 2001, in Ozona, Texas.

He was born on May 4, 1959, in Cahokia, Ill.

Mr. McCollum is survived by his parents, Ernest Junior and Mary May McCollum of Clinton; his grandmother, Esther U. McCollum of Clinton; four sisters, Almeta Soul of Bothell, Esther McCollum of Everett, Anita Jackson of Freeland and Pamela McCollum of Clinton; two brothers, Randy McCollum in Kentucky and Ronnie McCollum of Olympia; nine nieces; nine nephews; three great-nieces; and two great-nephews.

He is loved and missed by all.

Services will be Saturday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at Queen Ann Baptist Church, 2011 First N., Seattle.

Margaret E. Motteler

Margaret E. Motteler, 91, of Freeland, died Nov. 15, 2001, in Seattle. She was a former, well-known resident of Leavenworth.

Mrs. Motteler was born March 15, 1910, in Kennewick, Wash. to Burton and Lillian Zoe (Rudesill) Rutherford. In the fall of 1910 the family moved to Leavenworth, where she grew up and received her early education, graduating from Leavenworth High School in 1928. She then attended the University of Washington.

On March 22, 1933, she married Deryl Motteler in Wenatchee. They lived in Leavenworth, where they were associated with F.T. Motteler and Son Feed and Fuel Store and Motteler Orchards. In 1997 she moved to Freeland.

She was a charter member of Cascade Garden Club in Leavenworth and a member of the St. James Episcopal Church in Cashmere, Cascade Chapter of OES, Useless Bay Golf and County Club, and the University of Washington Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She was also Royal Lady of the Autumn Leaves in 1965.

She enjoyed birdwatching, gardening, playing bridge, entertaining and spending time at the cabin on Whidbey Island.

Mrs. Motteler is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Zoe and Del Neubecker of Stanwood; a daughter-in-law, Janet Motteler of Leavenworth; six grandchildren, Lauren and Paul Edlund, David Neubecker, Melissa and Jim Dolstad, Marianne and Brian Vincent, Megan and John Schiefelbein and Margaret Ann and John Coddington; and four great-grandchildren, Brianne and Emily Vincent and Katie and Madeleine Schiefelbein. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Deryl, her son Frank, and two brothers, Burton and Robert.

A memorial service of commemoration to celebrate the life of Margaret E. Motteler was conducted Monday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. at Ward’s Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth with Pastor Lindsy Ireland officiating. Inurnment will be in the Wenatchee Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Leavenworth Senior Citizens Center, P.O. Box 1033, or the Cascade Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 293, Leavenworth, WA 98826. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Whidbey Island at a later date.
