Betty Prentice

Betty Prentice, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully Jan. 17, 2002, at the age of 78. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Jack, in 1984 and a grandson, Michael, in 1994.

She and Jack moved to Langley in 1969. She enjoyed reading, bowling, playing bingo and watching the Mariners.

Betty is survived by three children, Jack Prentice, Donna Rea and Dyan Messina; five grandchildren, Staci Hull, Timi Rea, Dannen King, Chris Rea and Trace Messina; and five great-grandchildren, Frank Nick, Amy and Megan Hull, Skylar King and Jaden Rea.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. at Visser Home in Langley.

Gertrude E. Miller

Gertrude E. Miller, widow of Reid S. Miller, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at her home in Langley. She had been in failing health for several months.

She was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Seattle, to Telford O. Maple and Mary Frances Grant. She was a great-granddaughter of Jacob Maple, the first settler of King County. She received her education in the Seattle schools, attending Van Asselt School, Cleveland and Broadway high schools. She married Reid Miller in 1941. They were avid skiers and sailing enthusiasts in their younger years; they were among the founders of the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle. During World War II she was secretary to the commander of the Port of Seattle.

After the war, the couple moved to the San Francisco Bay area, and resided for many years in Fremont, Calif., where Mrs. Miller was employed as secretary in the city Building Department. Mr. Miller was a sales representative for several jewelry and home furnishings firms, maintaining an office at The Mart in San Francisco. Following retirement, they returned to the Puget Sound region. Mrs. Miller designed the couple’s home in Langley. Among her various interests were gardening, landscape design and miniature doll house furniture. Her husband died in 1990.

She is survived by a son, Gregg B. Miller, Irvine, Calif.; a daughter, Cindy Joseph, Yonkers, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Brian Miller, Bowley Joseph and Julia Joseph; a brother, T. Grant Maple, Bellevue.; a sister, Joyce Williams, Florence, Ore.; and two nieces, Shelley Carter of Eugene, Ore., and Carla Jackson of Florence, Ore.

In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
