A two-car collision on Highway 525 at Bush Point Road sent one passenger to Whidbey General Hospital and clogged highway traffic on Whidbey Island’s main north-south route.

The crash happened about 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Island County Fire District 3 Deputy Chief Mike Cotton said a Pontiac Aztek and a Ford Explorer collided and the Explorer sheared the front bumper off the Aztek before getting flipped onto its side.

A passenger from the Aztek was transported to the hospital in Coupeville.

“It looked ugly, but it appeared to be a very minor injury accident,” Cotton said.

Earlier reports said indicated a fatality and a fire. Cotton said neither was true, although the Washington State Patrol was notified prior to its arrival that there was a fatality on the scene.

The traffic snarl and accident scene were visible from local businesses.

“Like every flashing light on Whidbey is out there,” said Angus MacDonald, owner of the nearby Freeland U-Haul and The Tartan Thistle. “It’s bad. They closed things down where Bush Point Road crosses Highway 525.”

Traffic was diverted after the crash, but the highway was not closed.

The scene was cleared of both vehicles and traffic resumed unobstructed about 1:15 p.m.
