Police discovered a pipe bomb, an illegal rifle, other guns and a silencer inside a man’s car in Oak Harbor, according to court documents.

Deputies and detectives with the Island County Sheriff’s Office pulled over 44-year-old Carl H. Nyberg, of Anacortes, on State Highway 20 in Oak Harbor on Nov. 21 because they had probable cause to believe he had committed a felony domestic-violence assault earlier, a deputy sheriff’’s report states.

After Nyberg was arrested, the officers did a inventory of his BMW before it was towed and discovered a large knife, “a semi-automatic AR-15 style weapon” and a handgun.

At that point, detectives decided to impound the car and apply for a search warrant. Nyberg was arrested and is being held in jail on $50,000 bail.

Six days later, the detectives obtained the search warrant and they, along with an NCIS agent, looked through the car.

Deputies found another gun, loaded AR-15 magazines, what appeared to be a homemade silencer and a pipe bomb, the report says.

After photographing the bomb, the deputy took it outside the building and away from other people.

The Navy explosive ordnance disposal unit responded, X-rayed the device and found that it was “an active device capable of causing massive damage,” the deputy wrote.

According to the report, the rifle found in the car is considered an assault rifle under federal law, but it did not have serial numbers. It had “what appeared to be threading for a silencer,” according to the report.

Nyberg denied that the weapons were his and said the car belonged to a company.

Prosecutors charged Nyberg in Island County Superior Court Dec. 5 with unlawful possession or control of an explosive device and unlawfully carrying a loaded pistol in a vehicle.

The bomb charge came with a firearm enhancement that could add a mandatory five years to a sentence.

In the prior case, prosecutors charged Nyberg with assault in the third degree for an Oct. 9 incident in which he allegedly threw a hair brush at a woman and broke her nose.

Investigators don’t know what Nyberg may have planned to do with the bomb, according to a spokesman with the sheriff’s office.
