Island County planning commissioners will make a special site visit to Camp Casey tomorrow in anticipation of next week’s hearing on the plan to develop the historic property.

Planning commissioners will travel to the camp at the conclusion of their regular meeting, which starts at 9 a.m. in the county commissioners’ hearing room in the Courthouse Annex Building in Coupeville.

The planning commission is expected to reconvene at noon at the Camp Casey Conference Center, 1276 Engle Road, Coupeville.

Next week, the planning commission will hold a hearing on the challenge by the Whidbey Environmental Action Network to development plans at Camp Casey.

WEAN has been fighting Seattle Pacific University’s attempts to further develop Camp Casey for more than five years. SPU wants to designate the historic property as an “existing master planned resort” and has proposed the construction of six new retreat buildings, 40 cabins, an educational center and a chapel at Camp Casey so the camp can become financially self-sustaining.

The hearing on WEAN’s appeal is 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22.
