Who should run the Island County Fairgrounds?
That’s the question the Port of South Whidbey Commissioners will tackle at a special meeting tonight.
At the request of the Island County Board of Commissioners, the port district is considering the management of the nearly 13-acre property best known for hosting the annual Whidbey Island Area Fair.
The property, owned by the county, is at a crossroads. Its current managing group, the Island County Fair Association, has decided to try to renegotiate its lease with the county to run the property only if it gets regular maintenance and operations funding. Otherwise, the county will have to take care of it, which includes both building maintenance and scheduling/renting of facilities.
The port district’s special meeting begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at the port office, 1804 Scott Road, Freeland.
