“Freeland resident Truman Castle’s likeness is depicted in a charcoal drawing by artist, Faye Kazdal, who is offering her talents to help raise money for the purchase of Saratoga Woods. A portrait artist is offering residents the chance to put their best faces forward for the Save the Woods on Saratoga project. Portrait artist Faye Kazdal has volunteered to draw charcoal portraits and donate all proceeds to the Whidbey Camano Land Trust toward the purchase of Saratoga Woods. Kazdal will draw the portraits from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bayview Farmer’s Market each Saturday until the end of the market season. The price is $20.Kazdal has lived on Whidbey and is now a part-time resident dividing her time between the island and Seattle. As an island resident 20 years ago, I spent many happy hours drawing and painting at a home on the Saratoga Woods site, she said. We would often gather in the home, owned by Katherine Wood, to draw portraits of friends and neighbors. Kazdal remembers that the yard was always full of wonderful things to paint, including the magnificent rhododendrons in the spring and Wood’s prolific garden. It was such a welcoming place to visit. Now it is being preserved for many to enjoy, she said.Kazdal is an instructor at the Art Institute of Seattle. She received a bachelor of arts degree in art and teaching from the University of Washington, and more recently completed a year of classical animation study at the Vancouver Film School. Her work has won numerous awards in national shows. It is included in Showcase of American Pastels and was chosen for the cover of Rockport Publishers’ The Best of Pastels. Save the Woods on Saratoga is now into its final fund-raising effort to garner another $120,000 by Oct. 1, which will allow completion of the purchase of the remaining 70 acres of property. To date the Whidbey Camano Land Trust has raised $630,000 from 280 donors. “
