The state’s primary election is Tuesday, with four contested races in Island County. The top two vote getters in each race will advance to the November general election. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked Aug. 19 or earlier to be counted.

In the race for state senator in the 10th Legislative District, incumbent Mary Margaret Haugen, a Camano Island Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Linda Haddon and America’s Third Party candidate Sarah Hart.

In the race for state representative in the 10th District, Position 2, incumbent Republican Barbara Bailey is facing challengers Patricia Terry and Ann McDonald, both Democrats.

In the race for Island Superior Court Judge, Position 2, incumbent Vickie Churchill is being challenged by Coupeville attorney Craig Platt. The winner will be determined in Tuesday’s primary.

And in the race for Island County Commissioner, District 1, incumbent Republican Phil Bakke faces challengers Helen Price Johnson (D), Reece Rose (R) and independent Curt Gordon.

Approximately 44,550 ballots have been sent out for the vote-by-mail primary.

Island County Auditor Sheilah Crider said she expects about 60 to 62 percent of the ballots will be returned.

Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed is predicting a 46-percent statewide turnout for the state’s first-ever top-two primary.
