PSE issues warning on phishing email

Puget Sound Energy is warning its customers about a bogus email that looks like a bill-payment notification.

Puget Sound Energy is warning its customers about a bogus email that looks like a bill-payment notification.

PSE officials said the email is part of a nationwide “phishing” scam and may contain a computer virus.

The email resembles the notice the company sends to its online customers, and uses the PSE logo and includes links to the utility’s website.

PSE said people who receive the email should not click on the link in the email or open any attachments, and should delete the email notice immediately.

Company officials said the fake email can be spotted by the phrase “Dear Customer” at the start of the message; PSE always addresses its customers by their full name in its email billing notices.

Another indication of the fake email is a bold-faced message that says, “Refer to the attached file.”

PSE said the phishing email has been sent to PSE customers in Washington, and has been received by people in other states who are not PSE customers.

PSE customers can call 1-888-225-5773 if they have questions or need further information.
