Safety concerns doom Pottery Shed at Island County Fairgrounds

A small structure on the Island County Fairgrounds will be torn down this weekend. According to Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson, county Facilities Director Larry Van Horn recommended the demolition of the Pottery Shed for safety reasons. Described as a small lean-to attached to the Malone Building, it will be taken down on Saturday.

According to Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson, county Facilities Director Larry Van Horn recommended the demolition of the Pottery Shed for safety reasons. Described as a small lean-to attached to the Malone Building, it will be taken down on Saturday.

“It had some water damage and structural deficiencies,” Price Johnson said.

“There was concern he had about public safety,” she added.

The demolition is not connected to an existing proposal to turn the fairgrounds into an island event center, a plan that would demolish about half of the facility’s existing buildings.

That long-range plan has yet to be decided upon, the commissioner said
