An old-world sight sailed into the South Whidbey Harbor at Langley recently.

A ketch, the Ya Sure, docked in the marina the night of Oct. 11 after picking up grain in Sequim. The Ballard-based vessel is part of the Salish Sea Trading Cooperative, a non-profit trade group aiming for carbon-neutral transportation of goods. The crew delivered grains for Sundance Bakery in Langley, run by Kelly Baugh. According to an email from Kathy Pelish, general manager and co-founder of Salish Sea Trading, Baugh got in touch with her after a visit to the South Whidbey Yacht Club and Slow Food Whidbey meeting this summer.

The grains came from Nash’s Organic Produce, from which Baugh regularly gets her flour. She wanted to replace her truck delivery with low-emissions, consistent with Baugh’s practice of sourcing grains locally on Whidbey Island.
