The Coast Guard is urging boat owners to make sure their vessels are secure during windy periods.

The reminder came after a 27-foot Sun sailboat broke loose from its anchor buoy overnight Tuesday and drifted about 100 yards onto the beach at Holmes Harbor near Freeland Park.

The owner of the boat, a Freeland resident, retrieved it at high tide shortly after midnight Wednesday, and reported that there was no damage.

Marine Science Technician 3 Arthur Nelson of the Coast Guard office in Seattle said the report was one of many the agency typically receives during windy periods.

“The phone is ringing pretty much all the time with reports of drifts and people saying their boats are gone,” Nelson said.

“We tell people to make sure their ropes are tied down well, or to put on an extra rope,” he said.
