Search called off for missing diver

The Coast Guard suspended its search for a diver who went missing near Deception Pass Park at about 9:45 p.m. Monday.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for a diver who went missing near Deception Pass Park at about 9:45 p.m. Monday.

Coast Guard officials said the decision to suspend the search was made after an eight-hour search of a 20-mile-square area came up empty.

The search began about 2 p.m. Monday after Skagit County Fire Rescue received a call about a 19-year-old woman who was diving near Rosario Beach but had failed to return to the surface.

A Coast Guard HH-65 rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Port Angeles, two 33-foot rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Bellingham and a Coast Guard Auxiliary rescue boat crew were called out to search for the diver, as well as a rescue helicopter crew from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
