On Saturday, the Island County Sheriff’s Office lifted some of the summertime restrictions on open burning.

Now, with a written burn permit, county residents and businesses may burn natural vegetation. This is the only exception to the no burn rule, which has been in effect since July. Enclosed burns, such as those in fire pits and barbecues, are allowed.

The ban on all other types of outdoor burning remain in effect until Oct. 20, unless the sheriff’s office and the Island County fire warden choose to end the ban due to increased moisture levels.

To apply for a written burn permit, call 321-5111 Ext. 7343 to reach Fred Wefer, the county’s fire warden. Wefer can also be reached by pager at 360-738-5822.
