Fran and Bob Smith, of Langley, will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Aug. 26. They were married in 1962 at the home of Bob’s parents in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Fran and Bob met on the stoop of a friend’s house in 1959. They were married after Fran graduated from Brooklyn College and Bob was a medical student, having left Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for early admission to Downstate Medical School.

Fran worked as a kindergarten teacher while Bob finished his training. Their first son, Richard, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, where they lived while Bob served in the Public Health Service. The family returned to New York for Bob to complete his residency, and they had two more children, David and Marla.

In 1974, the young family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where Bob started a successful practice in plastic surgery.

Fran returned to graduate school in the early 1980s and earned a doctorate in psychology. She counseled couples and individuals until the couple’s mutual retirement in 2002.

Around then, Fran and Bob decided to spend summers on Whidbey Island for the comfortable weather and the company of their two sons who had settled in Seattle.

Fran and Bob have enjoyed many adventures in their 50 years together — traveling around the world, sailing on their boat, taking in cultural events and spending time with their many friends. They now have three grandsons, Mason and Max Binker and Lev Raskin, and delight in their time with their family.

Fran and Bob celebrated their anniversary with a party Aug. 12 at the Useless Bay Country Club.
