South Whidbey at Home expands service area to support more older adults

The membership-based nonprofit connects volunteers with older adults who want to age in place.

South Whidbey at Home, a Freeland-based membership-based nonprofit that connects volunteers with older adults who want to age in place at home on South Whidbey, is expanding its service area northward to include the full Greenbank zip code, according to a press release.

Previously, the organization’s northern boundary ended at Bakken Road.

Founded in 2016, South Whidbey at Home helps older adults remain in their homes and engaged in the community they love. For a small annual membership fee, participants can request in-home support, transportation for on-island errands and appointments and access to educational programs and social activities.

Today, more than 100 volunteers provide services to roughly 200 members in Clinton, Langley, Freeland and now all of Greenbank.

“This has been an exciting year of growth for the organization. We hired a new executive director who is developing new activities for our members and building partnerships throughout the community,” Board President Sam Wessel-Estes said. “With this service area expansion, we look forward to serving more older adults and welcoming new volunteers into our organization.”

South Whidbey at Home is actively welcoming new volunteers and members. To learn how to get involved, visit swathome.org, email info@swathome.org, or call 360-331-1971.

South Whidbey at Home is modeled after Beacon Hill Village, a member-based nonprofit started in a Boston neighborhood. Having learned of this successful aging in place model, local legend Lynn Willeford decided to create a similar program on South Whidbey. The goal was to help residents age in place, in the homes and community they loved, by fostering both independence and interdependence: neighbors helping neighbors.
