Cosmetic scrapes to a South Whidbey school bus will not require any repair costs for the school district.

A 17-year-old girl rear-ended the school bus on Maxwelton Road last Thursday afternoon. The teen driver’s Jeep Wrangler sustained a damaged front end, including a mangled hood, though the driver was not injured in the crash. Her name was not released by the Washington State Patrol because she was a minor.

Typically the state’s education office would send an inspector to examine buses involved in crashes. Dan Poolman, the South Whidbey School District’s assistant superintendent of business and transportation, said based on the lack of damage — other than a few scratches to the bus’ rear bumper — the state decided an inspection was not necessary.

About 30 students were being taken home when the bus was hit about 1 mile south of Highway 525 on Maxwelton Road. No students were injured in the collision, which was said to have felt like the bus hit a pothole.
