All are welcome. Childcare will be provided, but there will be no religious education during July or August.

Adult forum is on Social Principles

The United Methodist Church has a long history of concern for social justice. Its members have taken forthright positions since its founder John Wesley stood up for oppressed children forced to work in the mines of England in the 18th century.

The community can come learn about the Social Principles document and positions taken by the United Methodist Church on controversial issues at the church’s adult forums at 11 a.m. on Sunday mornings in July and August.

The forums will be held through July and August in the Fireside Room at Langley United Methodist Church. Rev. Paul Morris and Jennifer Haase Morris will be facilitators.

Former pastor speaks at House of Prayer

The Rev. Owen and Charlene Baldwin, recently returned for a visit from their fourth year in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will speak at House of Prayer church on Sunday, July 18.

Following more than 20 years of pastoring on South Whidbey, the Baldwins moved to Ethiopia as volunteers. There the former Peace Corps workers study Amharic, volunteer at two orphanages, teach English, assist international volunteers and train children’s workers. Owen Baldwin assists at a Newfrontiers church in the city.

The service at House of Prayer begins at 10:30 a.m. and is located at the intersection of Pioneer Park Place and Highway 525, across from Crawford Road. For more information, call 321-6070.

Pastor Wenzek gives the SWCC message

How can we know what we believe is actually true? Can we trust the veracity of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the young church at Colossae?

Pastor Darrell Wenzek speaks on the topic, “Spiritual Maturity in Christ,” based on Colossians 2:1-8, on Sunday morning at South Whidbey Community Church.

Morning worship begins at 10 and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 a.m., with Stan Walker leading an inductive study into Paul’s Letter to the Church at Ephesus and Art Angst leading a study into the Gospel of Luke. These are open classes to which everyone is invited.

SWCC gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

For further information about the church and services, call 221-1220.

A blessed life is the topic this Sunday

“To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings,” (“Science and Health”). Mary Baker Eddy began her book, written in 1875, with these words. This sentence recognizes the fact that our Creator blessed us with life and that the Creator sustains that life.

On Sunday, July 18, the Christian Science service first examines the promise from God, as provided in the Bible, that life is a blessing and is spiritual, and then discusses how you can live that promised life today. “The Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore,” (Psalms 133:3).

Everyone is welcome. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525.

‘Understanding as Commitment’ at Unity

Rev. Joanna Gabriel will give the talk “Understanding as Commitment” at Unity of Whidbey on Sunday.

On this special Sunday when the church honors and accepts new members into its spiritual community, it is timely to consider Charles Fillmore’s (co-founder of Unity) statement that “Spiritual Understanding is the quickening of the Spirit within.”

What a powerful stance it is to come from a place of spiritual understanding and discernment when making choices for our lives. Could it be that “commitment” often conjures up fear, or feels like something to be avoided because we frequently make choices without understanding or discernment, causing decisions and agreements that are not right for us, or that we cannot uphold?

The talk will explore how the power of understanding can strengthen our choices and empower our experience.

Music will be provided by Talia Toni Marcus and friends. Joy Williams will serve as platform assistant.

The service is at 10 a.m. and all are welcome.

Unity of Whidbey is located in its new chapel at 5671 Crawford Road in Langley.

Adult forum looks at early Christians

Ted Brookes will present the topic “The Early Christian Mission” at the adult forum this Sunday at St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland.

This is the first of two lectures dealing with the spread of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire.

Within 300 years, the religion moved from being a small Jewish sect practiced by Jesus followers in Jerusalem to a world religion that commanded the attention, and eventually the respect, of the Roman authorities.

This particular lecture considers the earliest phases of the Christian mission by exploring its missionary strategy and message as reflected in the Pauline letters and the Book of Acts.

Here, the forum will consider what Christian missionaries told people to convince them to abandon their pagan beliefs, and to accept Jesus and his death and Resurrection for salvation.

The forum is at 9:15 a.m. Sunday.
