South Whidbey churches plan weekend services

Series looks at Christmas carols

Beginning this week, South Whidbey Community Church will present a series of Christmas sermons that teach about the “theology of Christmas carols.”

Sunday morning, Pastor Darrell Wenzek will speak about the words: “Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall Come to Thee, O’Israel,” which is based on Isaiah 11:1-10.

Sunday worship at SWCC is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by adult learning forums at 9 a.m., with Stan Walker leading a study in the book of Ephesians. This is an open class and everyone is invited.

SWCC is a local independent, non-denominational church that adheres to the National Association of Evangelical’s Statement of Faith. It is open to everyone, and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

The power of dreams explored

Songwriter Doug Benecke will pesent “To Sleep: Perchance To Dream” at the Sunday service for Unity of Whidbey.

Though December is a busy, and even frantic month in many of our lives, nature’s cycles urge us to slow down, rest in our warm homes and turn our focus inward. It may be a month of holiday shopping, but also a season when a sleeping natural world draws us to dreaming.

How can we renew our spirits through the power of dreams in this darkest time of year, what dreams can we conjure up for the new year ahead, and what dream-like trances can our discernment penetrate, with spirit’s help?

Benecke’s lesson will be accompanied by musical assistance from violinist Talia Toni Marcus. The platform assistant will be Joy Williams.

Also on Sunday, “A Course in Miracles” group meets from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

All are welcome. Unity of Whidbey is in its new chapel at 5671 Crawford Road in Langley. Visit Unity of Whidbey’s website at http://www.unityofwhidbeyisland.org for more information.

Sunday service explores God as creator

On the first Sunday of December, the Christian Science service explores and celebrates God as the only cause and creator, freeing us from any beliefs of sickness or of sin because they are not created by God, whose creation was declared “good.”

“God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis,” (“Science and Health”). “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made,” (John 1:3).

Everyone is welcome at this service, which begins at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525 (just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road).
