South Whidbey Fire/EMS’s year-old fireboat will likely have a replacement engine in a few weeks.

The vessel’s starboard engine failed on June 25 during a regular training exercise. Fire Chief Rusty Palmer said the district’s insurance company, Enduris, will pick up the bulk of the costs for the $40,000 replacement engine with a $1,000 deductible cost for the district.

“Our insurance company stepped up and said they would cover it,” Palmer said. “We hope to have it complete in a few weeks.”

An assessor from Enduris will evaluate the engine and value the loss, according to Palmer.

“They make the determination whether or not it’s covered,” Palmer said.

Palmer said that Enduris has done a good job for them in the past, referring back to when they helped replace a pump on Engine 34.
