Scott Mauk, a longtime principal and teacher in the South Whidbey School District, will work for the Edmonds School District next year.

The current assistant principal and athletic director at South Whidbey High School helped establish the district’s alternative school. Formerly called Bayview School, it was transformed from a high school to a kindergarten through grade 12 alternative program after he was moved to the high school. Mauk spent most of his career in alternative education in South Whidbey schools, and he will return to that arena with Edmonds as the principal of Edmonds Heights K12.

Edmonds’ alternative school is a parent partnership program with about 500 students, similar in its structure to the former Whidbey Island Academy, which Mauk directed for two years.

“I am really thrilled and humbled to be offered and to accept the job of principal at Edmonds Heights K12,” Mauk wrote in an email.

“I am grateful to my colleagues and friends here and will miss them and the kids and families of this community.”

He begins his new position July 1, which is the end of the school year.

Edmonds Heights’ outgoing principal Danny Rock, who accepted the principal’s position at Vashon Island High School, highlighted Mauk’s experience in parent partnerships as a boon for the school.

Board to tour Outdoor Classroom

School board members will roll up their pant legs and walk around the Outdoor Classroom this month.

The tour is slated for 11:30 a.m. to 1 :30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22. District leaders will meet the program’s new executive director, Rick Baker.

Outdoor Classroom is located at 7015 S. Maxwelton Road in Clinton. It is part of the Whidbey Watershed Stewards mission to educate young people of Whidbey’s watersheds, salmon and the land. The area also includes a self-guided trail that is open year-round to the public.
