The Island County commissioners changed speed limits on South and Central Whidbey this week.

On Tuesday, the board changed a section of Smugglers Cove Road to 40 mph from 50 mph. That section is now between a point 0.58 miles north of Spahr Road southerly to a point a half-mile south of Westcliff Drive. It had extended southerly to a point 520 feet south of Westcliff Drive.

The board also revised the speed limit to 35 miles per hour, from 50 mph, on Engle Road from the Coupeville town limits south to Hill Road. Commissioners had agreed to the change in September but this week’s action finalized it. County engineer Bill Oakes pledged again, as he did in September, that he will study whether parts or all of Engle Road should be a no-passing zone. He also said storm drains that some maintain are a menace to bicyclists will be raised the next time the road is resurfaced.
