With a territory that includes Whidbey Island and Mukilteo and a few staff painters, he’s got a lot to manage for a college kid.Parrick, the son of Robert and Gwen Parrick, can even get college credit for the position as he majors in international business. What he likes most about the College Works experience is that, unlike many summer jobs, it offers management experience — much more so than filling grocery bags or bucking bales. I’m running my own company, he said. I do the hiring, firing and marketing. The company does the bookkeeping, payroll and taxes, so Parrick doesn’t get bogged down in paperwork. Not that managing is all there is to his position. He also climbs ladders and paints houses, cutting costs by helping do the actual labor with employees Damien Sidhu and Chandler Roman. If you do it yourself you know exactly how to do it, Parrick said, adding that such knowledge makes managing easier.Winning a College Works franchise wasn’t easy, Parrick said. At Western, 1,200 applicants applied this year, 70 made the cut, and only half of those made it through a really difficult internship program.Like most businesses, there are winners and losers in the College Works program. Some franchise holders make zero dollars during the summer, while others earn upwards of $20,000, Parrick said. You make more money if you know how to manage, he noted.Parrick said young people such as himself are capable of managing and deserve a chance from businesses, even if they aren’t going to college or have yet to earn a degree. You can rely on young people, he said. We’ll do a great job. And, speaking for his business, Your satisfaction is guaranteed.Painting offered into SeptemberTrevor Parrick and his College Works crew will be painting houses on Whidbey Island all summer, well into September.
