“When sub-district playoffs start for the South Whidbey girls tennis team next week, the post season will not have come a moment too soon for the Falcons. This week, they finished their regular-season tour of the 3A Wesco league with two tough matches, one of which they will be happy to forget. On Monday, the girls took a 7-0 lumping at Jackson before recovering for a 4-3 meet win at home against Meadowdale Tuesday. The loss was the worst in an extremely successful regular season. The Falcons’ final record of 10-3 would place them as the number-two team in the Wesco, if they were actually part of that league. Number one, of course, is Jackson.But the Meadowdale meet was far kinder to the Falcons. After losing only her third match of the year Monday, senior Lindsay Sievers snapped back on the home court to win a 6-4, 6-1 in the number one singles match against one of the two players who had beaten her during this season. It was the kind of match that her coach, Tom Kramer, said she needed before going into the playoffs.Lindsay had a big match yesterday, Kramer said.Also cruising in singles were Kylie Bozym (6-2, 6-2), and Kaitlin King, who did not surrender a single game in her two set match.In doubles, only the Number 3 team of Kelsey Ellis and Jaci Gutzmer were able to find a winning stroke, taking their match in straight 6-3, 6-0 sets.The Falcons now move onto their subdistrict meet on May 9. South Whidbey will square off against Lakewood and Blaine in a miniature North Cascades Conference meet at Lakewood High School starting at 9 a.m.”
