This weekend’s church services for Sunday, Aug. 9

‘Impostor, Pretender, Creator’ at Unity

At the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday, songwriter and speaker Doug Benecke will speak of creating lives of joy and fulfillment, passing through a series of stages. Sometimes we may feel like impostors or pretenders before we discover our genuine creative selves.

Unity services are held at 10 a.m. at Bavview Community Hall. All are welcome.

The power of spirit at Christian Science

Spirit is substance, and God is spirit. This indicates that spirit has more power, more reality, than anything not spiritual. Making this truth practical in everyone’s daily lives is the focus this Sunday at the Christian Science church. “The ‘still, small voice’ of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe’s remotest bound.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures)

Join in sharing in that scientific thought this week. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. at 2411 E. Highway 525 (across from Useless Bay Road).

Martha Murphy is guest at UUCWI

Martha Murphy, founder of the Whidbey Children’s Theater, will be the speaker at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10.

Murphy will talk about her personal journey to finding peace, describing her experiences overcoming some of the hurdles she has faced and using adversity as an opportunity for transformation. She will draw on her life’s work with children to emphasize the importance of mentors and role models and spending time with people who inspire.

The service will be informal and outdoors on the church property at 20103 Highway 525. All are welcome, though there is no religious education or childcare in August.

<b.Popular series continues at SWCC

Darrel Wenzek continues his popular expository series from Genesis tomorrow at South Whidbey Community Church with the topic, “In the Beginning”, based on the Gospel of John 1:1-3.

Wenzek has spent considerable time researching the Biblical basis for creation, and God’s purposes for humanity. He is one of the regular speakers at SWCC, a former pastor of Evengelical Free churches, and holds a Master of Divinity Degree from Western Theological Seminary in Portland.

South Whidbey Community Church intentionally enjoys a wide variety of gifted and educated speakers at each Sunday morning worship service. Both the church and all its speakers adhere to the National Association of Evangelicals Statement of Faith.

Each worship service begins at 10 a.m. and is preceded at 9 a.m. by two adult learning forums: one is a discussion of the Book of Romans, led by Stan Walker; the other a study of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, led by Jim Craft. And midweek Bible studies continue in the Gospel of Luke, at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, led by Art Angst at Rick and Dinah Zapata’s home.

South Whidbey Community Church is open to everyone and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley.

The church is a newly-formed independent, evangelical, non-denominational church. For more information on the church and services, go to www.swcchurch.wordpress.com.
