“At the start of every track season, the South Whidbey Falcon boys and girls get tuned up in a low stress way by racing against opponents that don’t really count.Playing host to teams from 4A Oak Harbor and Henry Jackson Thursday, the Falcons rediscovered their running legs, jumping springs, and throwing arms in the season opener at Waterman Field. Competing in a limited schedule of events, the Falcons were able to concentrate on the things they did best. Highlights in the meet included a number of performances that exceeded those posted mid season in 1999. Colin Murphy’s 5-10 high jump came more than a month ahead of schedule, while Lisa Depender also showed she was in mid-April form by running a 12:29 in the 3,200. The boys team also looks ready to contend for state rankings in the 3,200 after juniors Braden Giswold and Bruce Hymas finished 1-2 in 10:06 and 10:09.Junior sprinter Dail Bates led a big crowd of Falcons in the short distances with a 13.4 in the 100 meter dash, and senior relay captain Kenady Rueland went it alone with a 28.4 in the 200. Matt Steiner was the lead boy sprinter, covering 100 meters of rubber track in 11.7.Falcon track rookies also performed well, led by Caitlin Robinson with a 4-8 leap in the high jump and Julie Gabelein’s 5:55 in the 1,600.The Falcons compete next on Thursday at home against Granite Falls, Kings, and Seattle Christian.”
