Whidbey Democrats shift leadership

The Island County Democrats met for their biennial reorganization meeting earlier this month and selected a new slate of officers.

First and foremost, Oak Harbor resident was selected to lead the organization as chairman.

“I’m honored to be chosen as Chair of the Island County Democratic Party for 2015-2016. Thank you!” said Huffine, in the group’s January newsletter. “I’m also very grateful to Aaron Simpson, Duane Fulgham, and my other predecessors who laid all the groundwork. I look forward to working with our excellent E-board and all Island County Democrats.”

He also outlined some of the party’s goals, from recruiting more precinct committee officers in preparation for the 2016 national and local elections and building a “back bench of strong Democrat candidates to run for local office” to working to register more Democrats, protect the environment, and party platforms such as tax fairness, sustainability, social justice and labor rights.

Other chosen leaders include Vice Chairman Gary McIntyre, Vice Chairwoman Melody Risner, Secretary Carolyn Tamler, Treasurer Rebecca Wagner, state Committeeman Tom Riggs and state Committeewoman Sue Tingstad

The party’s next meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Commissioners Hearing Room in Coupeville.
