Whidbey fire districts to discuss ICOM overrun

Commissioners of Whidbey Island’s three fire districts will attend a special meeting Tuesday to discuss a projected ICOM dispatch center budget overrun.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Day Road Fire Station, 3253 Day Road, Greenbank.

At issue is an estimated $100,000 overrun on projected updates to the county’s emergency dispatch system, said Kenon Simmons, Island County Fire District 3 commission chairman. Fire District 3 officials called the meeting.

Simmons said Monday that ICOM representatives will explain the details concerning the increase in projected costs.

He said ICOM is updating equipment, including increasing the height of District 3’s transmission tower at Cultus Bay.

Simmons said the island’s three fire districts, the Island County Sheriff’s Office, Whidbey General Hospital’s emergency services and other law enforcement agencies contribute to ICOM based on a complex formula.

He said District 3 probably has enough money in its contingency fund to cover its share of an overrun.

“I’d hate to see it spent that way,” Simmons said. “But if we’re responsible for it, we’ll make it right.”
