The Whidbey Island Fellowship of Reconciliation will hold its fall meeting tonight in the annex at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Members of the fellowship will share ideas on following up on the “bean poll” conversations begun at the Island County Fair and how the group might serve peace and reconciliation efforts on Whidbey island.

The meeting is from 7 to 9 p.m.

The fellowship sponsored a booth at the county fair in August, and the booth featured a “bean poll” that gave people the chance to drop 10 beans in eight tubes that represented seven possible categories of the federal discretionary budget, plus a tube for supporting Social Security.

Nearly 600 people visited the booth, and the tube marked for education was filled with the highest percentage of beans — 1,342 beans, or 23 percent of votes cast.

Other bean polls where people thought deserved federal funding were Medicare and healthcare (853 beans, 14.8 percent); science and environment (831 beans, 14.4 percent); poverty programs (722 beans, 12.5 percent); Social Security (686 beans, 11.98 percent); job stimulus (576 beans, 9.7 percent); military/Pentagon (525 beans, 9.1 percent); and diplomacy and international relations (248 beans, 4.3 percent).
