Some would say Jim Sebastian is pretty darn lucky.

The Coupeville resident won $440,001 playing Washington’s Lottery Hit 5 game.

Sebastian, 77, realized he won the morning of July 21 when he went to the store to check his ticket. The reader scrolled, “See Lottery Clerk” and then revealed the amount of money he had won.

“My heart was thumping and my legs were shaking,” Sebastian said. “I drove directly home to tell my wife.”

He and his wife claimed the prize Monday, July 22 at Washington’s Lottery Everett Regional Office. They planned to go to lunch and do a little shopping to treat themselves afterwards. Over the longer term, Sebastian said he would like to replace his old truck with a new one. His wife said she wants to share some of the money with their family.

Sebastian, a retired construction worker, said he likes to play $1 on Hit 5 three times per week. He said that when the jackpot gets higher, he plays $5 instead.

The winning ticket was purchased at Coupeville Country Store, which is receiving a $4,400 selling bonus.
