Whidbey man accused of child rape

An Oak Harbor man is accused of molesting and repeatedly raping a girl on North Whidbey and violating a no-contact order, according to court documents.

Jose Altamirano Valdez appeared in Island County Superior Court Thursday.

Judge Christon Skinner found probable cause existed to believe Altamirano Valdez committed the crimes of rape in the second degree, three counts of child rape in the third degree, child molestation in the third degree and violation of a no-contact order.

Deputy Prosecutor Tamara Fundrella asked the judge to set Altamirano Valdez’s bail at $75,000 based on the “egregious” nature of the alleged crimes, the deep fear of the victim, his potential danger to the community and the victim, and the fact that he violated a court order by going to the girl’s school.

Defense attorney Matt Montoya argued that Altamirano Valdez should be freed on his personal recognizance because of his ties to the community, which includes work at a seafood business, and his lack of a criminal record.

Skinner said he would have released Altamirano Valdez without bail except for the violation of the court order. He ordered that he be held on $5,000 bail.

A report by a detective with the Oak Harbor Police Department describes how upset the victim was in describing the crime, sobbing and saying she was “disgusted and embarrassed,” the report states.

Altamirano Valdez was a friend of the family in Oak Harbor. The girl reported that he first started sexually assaulting her when she was 14 years old, the report states. She described how he used physical force to repeatedly sexually assault her, the report states.
