Whidbey Island has been selected by Where to Retire as a “top retirement town,” said Mary Lu Abbott, the magazine’s editor.

Whidbey will be profiled in the September/October issue, which hits newstands across the country on Aug. 23.

“Whidbey Island’s serene beauty is an ideal backdrop for active retirement,” Abbot said.

“Boomers take advantage of the waterfront lifestyle by fishing, boating, clamming or crabbing and enjoy festivals and cultural events throughout the year,” she added. “The small-town feel of the island brings a comfort level that allows for socializing and making friends.”

Abbott said approximately 700,000 Americans pull up stakes and move to new towns to retire every year, and relocating retirees are healthier, better educated and more affluent than those who choose to not relocate.

“Where to Retire” is published six times a year and has a national circulation of 200,000. It is sold at various newsstands and at Barnes & Noble bookstores.
