The Washington State Patrol will ramp up seat belt and distracted driving patrols in Island and Skagit counties over the next two weeks, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission has announced.

Following the success of the first statewide distracted driving extra enforcement campaign in April, traffic cops will once again be on the prowl May 19-June 1 for unbuckled and distracted drivers as part of the annual “Click it or Ticket” patrols, according to a news release.

The Handheld Cell Phone Use law became a primary law in Washington in June 2010. Likewise, after the primary seat belt law took effect in 2002, seat belt violations initially increased and then seat belt use increased.
