In the finest tradition of South Whidbey High School athletics, the Lady Falcons ended their season Tuesday night in Bellingham by fighting to the final seconds before succumbing 62-44 to the Burlington-Edison Tigers in a District One playoff game.
The girls were tied at 11 with two minutes left in the first quarter when top shooters Caitie and Lindsey Newman went out on fouls. The Tigers sized up the situation and took advantage, forging an unassailable 35-19 lead at the half. The girls fought hard but couldn’t overtake the rampaging Tigers who were on target into the net all night.
In the game preceding, Ferndale scorched Shorecrest 61-43 to advance to the semi-final round.
Monday, Feb. 27, practice begins for the next round of spring events as baseball, softball, boys soccer, track, girls tennis and golf get underway.
