Woman accused of stealing from boats

An Anacortes woman is accused of selling equipment stolen off boats at the Cornet Bay Marina.

An Anacortes woman is accused of selling equipment stolen off boats at the Cornet Bay Marina two years ago, according to court documents.

In October 2021, the owners of two boats docked at the Island County dock at the North Whidbey marina reported to police that someone stole line haulers off the vessels. The haulers, or pot pullers, were worth about $500 each.

A deputy obtained surveillance video, but it didn’t help identify the perpetrator.

One of the victims found his stolen hauler, which had unique paint on it, for sale on the website Offerup.com and notified the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy spent months investigating online through LeadsOnline and a law enforcement database. The deputy obtained search warrants for OfferUp and an email provider.

As a result, 44-year-old Nicole C. Thompson was identified as the seller, according to the deputy’s report. The deputy found that she was in prison at the time and went to talk to her.

Thompson admitted that she sold one of the haulers online, the report states. She said she got it from a man who owed her $300 for drugs; she allegedly admitted that she thought it might have been stolen.

Thompson was unable to identify the man beyond his first name.

Prosecutors charged Thompson in Island County Superior Court Nov. 8 with trafficking in stolen property in the second degree. If convicted of the charge, she could spend more than a year in prison under the standard sentencing range.
