On the night of April 17, a woman in an Oak Harbor home heard her roommate screaming for help. She ran into the woman’s bedroom and discovered a man raping her, according to court documents.
The woman yanked the man onto the floor and “started beating his ass,” a detective’s report states; the man left the room and tried to jump off a balcony and run out the front door but was blocked by friends and neighbors who showed up.
Oak Harbor police arrested the suspect, 22-year-old Genzen G. Reano, after arriving at the scene. Reano, who is in the Navy, repeatedly asked if the police were going to tell the Navy and if he was going to get kicked out of the Navy, an officer wrote in a report.
Reano showed no remorse for the victim or his actions, the detective wrote.
Prosecutors charged Reano in Island County Superior Court April 20 with rape in the second degree.
In Island County Superior Court April 18, Chief Criminal Prosecutor Eric Ohme asked that Reano be held on $50,000 bail based on a risk of flight and the danger he will commit another violent offense or interfere with the administration of justice. Defense Attorney Matt Montoya said Reano should be released on his personal recognizance given his lack of any criminal history.
Judge Christon Skinner released Reano on his personal recognizance, indicating he could see no basis to impose bail under Criminal Rule 3.2 but saying he understood why the prosecution was asking for it.
In an interview with police, the victim said she met Reano through Snapchat and invited him over for drinks and cards with her roommates and friends. Reano became drunk quickly and was told to sleep on the couch, the detective’s report states.
The woman said she woke up in the night with Reano raping her, the report states. She tried to fight him but he put his hand over her mouth, penetrated her with an object and tried to anally rape her before she was saved by her roommate, the detective wrote.
If convicted of the charge, Reano could face from 6.5 years to 8.5 years in prison under the standard sentencing range.
Reano is scheduled to be arraigned May 9.
