“Returning to Whidbey for its seventh year, the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association will hold its hand-tool stone carving workshop at the Whidbey Institute’s Chinook center, May 5-7. Meredith Earls and Tracy Powell will instruct at all levels of experience: The total novice who has never carved stone before will be taken through the selection of stone, how to begin the piece and the techniques to create a finished sculpture. Experienced carvers can learn something new or gain inspiration from the surroundings of the Chinook lands. For the third year, the Island Arts Council is providing financial sponsorship of a South Whidbey High School student to attend the workshop. This year’s recipient is Sarah Williams. As a nonprofit educational association, the NWSSA is very pleased to have the involvement of the community for this event, Whannell said.
