Yabba dabba loo! Flinstone toilets on the way

Oak Harbor is looking to add two Portland Loos at Flintstone Park.

The stainless steel toilets are known for their semi-transparent design that aid in crime prevention while also providing privacy for a user to relieve themselves.

City documents describe the loos as simple, sturdy, environmentally-friendly, easy to maintain and vandal resistant.

The additional loos have already been purchased and the city received $70,000 from Island Transit toward their purchase, according to city documents.

“All we need is a site plan and bid documents.” Parks Operations Manager Hank Nydam said during Monday’s teleconferenced Park Board meeting. “I have stressed to engineering that this has to be done with somebody that is competent.”

He noted some issues that occurred following the installation of the Portland Loos at nearby Windjammer Park.

“We’ve got some questions back and forth on warranty issues,” Nydam said.

“Portland Loo basically says that, since they were installed incorrectly, that the warranties are null and void.”

He added that the loos were reinstalled, but the issues still remain.

The parks department does not have a set date for when the Portland Loos are supposed to be installed at Flinstone Park.

The current restrooms will be demolished to make way for the loos, according to the city.

The current restrooms building has been locked because of COVID-19 concerns, but the parks department has discussed reopening them, according to Nydam.
