Cicely Harris

Cicely Ann Harris, 91, died Aug. 16, 2011.

She was born Aug. 5, 1920 to Thomas and Lyda (nee. Lockridge) Herman in Moscow, Idaho. A member of Gamma Phi Beta, she graduated in interior design from University of Idaho.

Cicely worked at Frederick & Nelson’s headquarters as a display designer and house-ware buyer until World War II spurred her to take up flying. She earned a single engine pilot’s license and met the love of her life, Richard Harris, while at the Army Air Corps Denver flight school. She was in charge of scheduling, and made sure handsome pilots were free Friday nights.

Following a 1944 ceremony in Woodside, Calif., their successful marriage lasted 64 years. They lived in California, Oregon, Tennessee, Missouri and Illinois before retiring to Freeland. Together, they built their homes and breathtaking gardens.

An accomplished artist, Cicely created floral displays from her garden’s bounty. She operated the Wreath Room selling her creations at local art fairs. She was passionate about gardening, decorating, politics and Japanese art and culture. She and Richard traveled frequently to Japan, often catching the cherry blossoms in bloom.

Cicely was fanatical about eating healthy, thinking “happy” thoughts and staying clear of the medical establishment, believing these were the keys to long life. She made many friends at the Island Athletic Club’s aqua aerobics classes.

She is survived by children Jana, Tennessee (Erica) and Lisa; and grandchildren Lyda Harris and Ava Galbraith.

Services will be held next summer.

Donations in Cicely’s memory may be made to the Whidbey Camano Land Trust (765 Wonn Road, Barn C-201, Greenbank, WA 98253).
