Donald Ellwood Mackie

Donald Ellwood Mackie

Donald Ellwood Mackie lost his lengthy battle with cancer on Oct. 22, 2015, at home, surrounded by his family.

He was born to Eloise and Leland Mackie, in Everett, on May 17, 1951. Don was a fifth generation Mackie, graduating from Langley High School in 1969. He loved spending his life on Whidbey Island.

Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Don joined the Washington State Ferry System when he was 16 years old. He enjoyed a 41-year career and valued his working relationships with the many shipmates and crews he worked with over the years.

Don also enjoyed blues music, playing his many guitars and attending concerts across the region. He was a man of few words; but in his quiet way he let those around him know how much he loved them. He was especially grateful for the devotion and care of his wife, Paula, during his battle with cancer.

Don is survived by his wife of 36 years, Paula Mackie; his daughters, Erin Mackie-Ratcliff (Nate) and Devon Mackie; grandchildren, Morgan, Kamryn, Morgan and Noah; his mother Eloise Mackie; and two sisters, Debbie Richards (Hap) and Rita Eagle (Michael).

A celebration of his life will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club, 3334 Brooks Hill Road, Langley. Dessert potluck. All are welcome.
