Dorothy O. Moffat, 82, of Freeland, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her children Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012. A native of Springfield, Mo., Mrs. Moffat graduated from Springfield High School and Southwest Missouri University. She moved to the Seattle area as an airline stewardess and flew from 1951 to 1959 with Northwest Orient Airlines. In 1956, a plane she crewed out of Seattle ditched in Puget Sound. The crew’s use of seat cushions as emergency flotation devices subsequently became standard procedure.

She married David A. Moffat of Seattle in 1959, who pre-deceased her in 2008. They are survived by their two children, Colin Moffat (Sophie), and Merrill Biesada (Pete) and their five beloved grandchildren. Also surviving are her two sisters, Rosalind Fellwock and Bonnalie Campbell, and their families.

She received a Masters Degree from the University of Washington in 1973 and taught in the Mukilteo School District for 27 years, retiring from Harbor Pointe Middle School in 1995. The family lived in Windandtide (Edmonds) until her retirement, at which time they moved to Whidbey Island.

Mrs. Moffat loved watching the ever-changing moods of Puget Sound and never tired of the orcas, deer, eagles, or the sunset views from her home.

Her faith sustained her all her life; she was an active member at Trinity Lutheran (Freeland), participating in the church choir and outreach programs. Her hobbies were music, gardening, reading, flower arranging, skiing and helping her husband with his stamp collection. She was a supportive PEO member (IH Chapter). Mr. and Mrs. Moffat traveled extensively in their retirement years.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 18341 State Route 525 in Freeland. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate contributions to either Trinity Lutheran Church (Freeland) or The Dorothy Moffat Estate for a scholarship fund.
