Dorothy Sofge

Dorothy Lannom “Dottie” Sofge died at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville, on Nov. 3, 2011 at the age of 87. She was born Nov. 28, 1923 in Memphis, Tenn. to J.E. and Hattie Lannom. Dottie was raised in Memphis.

She attended college and then during World War II, traveled to Washington, D.C. to work for Federal Civil Service as an accounting technician. While there, she met John Sofge. On February 23, 1945, they were married.

Dottie and John continued working for the government and were transferred to El Paso, Texas, working at Biggs Air Force Base and Fort Bliss.

They both retired in El Paso, but decided to spend their summers in the more temperate climate of the Pacific Northwest. They found property in Greenbank and built a summer home. After many years of commuting, they decided to make Greenbank their home.

Dottie was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church. She was a member of St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland.

She loved playing bridge at the Bayview Senior Center. During her lifetime Dottie was involved with many groups and organizations, which included the Daughters of the King in El Paso, the El Paso and Whidbey Island Chapters of Beta Sigma Phi and The Greenbank Progressive Club.

Dottie is survived by many dear friends including Joan and Sherm Wortman. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1998.

Memorial services for Dottie will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church with Rev. Nigel Tabor-Hamilton officiating. Cremation was held and interment will follow in the church Columbarium. Memorials may be made to a charity of donor’s choice.
